  1. Consider the wavelength of the radiation. Different types of radiation have different wavelengths, which means they interact with different RSMs differently. For example, ionizing radiation has a short wavelength and can travel through materials easily, while non-ionizing radiation has a longer wavelength and requires more shielding to be effective. 

  1. Consider the energy of the radiation. High-energy radiation can damage DNA and other sensitive cells more than low-energy radiation. To avoid serious injury or death, protect yourself and your personnel by using RSMs that are designed to block high-energy radiation.
